pd 5: a garden party by klindicative pd 5: a garden party by klindicative
project designer. check it out: [link]

Name of Topic: A Garden Party.
Flower: Stock. [link]
Fabric(s): Crepe satin, matte and slightly stiff.
Model: Hilary.
Description: A deconstructed type coat with a large obi-like waist section, and an extraordinary series of cascading ruffles down the back. The sleeves are dolman sleeves, with pleating at the cuffs and a large piece of fabric cut to look like a deteriorated petal...sort-of? Not really. Sorry, I'm not much good with these descriptions. Ultra-wide leg floor-length pants complete the look.

When I first read the challenge, I freaked. I know nothing about flowers. Nor anything about avant-garde. Absolutely nothing.

But, I got myself a square of Hersey's, put on some Sufjan Stevens, and started searching. This is how I found stock.

I saw it on a site that sold bouquets, and it just looked so incredibly different from all the other flowers. It wasn't extravagant, or brightly coloured (although, they can be--its just that they werent in this picture). These are not centerpiece flowers; they're used for adding "line and mass", as the Flower Library says.

I just fell right in love. The tiny intricate blossoms...beautiful. IT was simple and elegant. It reminded me of a wedding.

But then I looked closer. The petals of the flowers were all tightly tangled up and inside one another. It was impossible to tell where one blossom started and another began. This elegant simple plant was actually a complete mess.

It was brilliant. Perfect.

The fact is, most beautiful polished things are actually a complete mess inside. Inside a perfect orange is a tangled web of white bitter rind. Inside your sleek computer is a jumble of boards and wires. Geodes. Do I even need to mention people and relationships?

This was the inspiration behind this design. Messy and elegant. At the same time. Co-existing. I once had a teacher who would say that the greatest ability of human beings is to simultaneously believe two completely opposing ideas.

So, there you have it. I loved drawing this because...well...ruffles! Ruffles are one of my favourite things to draw, maybe because they're so labour intensive. Kind of weird that I would like that, I know. But, yeah. as soon as I saw the stock, I knew that my design would have ruffles. Ruffles. Ruffles ruffles ruffles.

But, what's cool about these ruffles is that I designed them specifically to mimic the falling of the petals in the picture of the flower I posted above. I sketched the bunch of flowers, and then drew the ruffles on top, conforming to the shape of the individual blossoms. You probably can't tell, but it makes me warm inside to know. And now you know. And you can say, "Oh, cool." Or not. You might think it's kind of stupid to waste so much time and effort on a fashion piece. Well, you know what? You stink.

I don't think I have anything else to say. It's like, five in the morning. I think there's something wrong with my eyes, too. I'm having trouble focusing. Ergo, if the drawing's messy, I apologize. I really...I've been having trouble seeing lately.

Sun's rising. That's my cue to exit.

Later, kids.

I just love this. There is a ton of detail in this piece, so you can tell you were really into this design. I am too quite frankly.

It looks like something Freddie Mercury would have worn in the 70's, I like that.

I knew it! Instant fav!
This is simply spectacular. And the dramatic drapery just blows my socks off. If you do not win, I doubt anyone else deserves the throne.

I hate you!
